El-Rom Tissue Culture Nursery Partnership with Hortiv

El-Rom Cultures is a leading nursery specializing in producing high-quality seedlings through tissue culture, primarily focusing on Berries. They’ve operated since 2008 and use advanced tissue culture techniques to provide disease-free, genetically identical plants. The entire process, from laboratory cultivation to mesh house hardening, takes about 8 months. El-Rom supplies a variety of seedlings including blueberries, raspberries, currants, and horseradish.

The Challenge

The company is exploring raspberry production due to increasing demand and sees tissue culture as a method that offers cleanliness and robust growth. One major advantage of tissue culture is the year-round production of seedlings, which circumvents seasonal limitations. However, the challenge in the laboratory is to reduce the duration of the growth cycle, optimizing the process to meet market demands more efficiently.

The Solution

The company provides experimental protocol development services and has integrated lighting control into its processes. They have a relationship with HORTIV Megalight, impressed by their lighting technology, especially its computer-controlled spectrum customization, which is beneficial for research. Guy, the laboratory manager of El Rom "Having the ability to control specific lighting spectrums and match them to your research needs, coupled with the advantage of local manufacturing, brings might a lot of flexibility and efficiency to the projects. This customized approach to lighting seems like a real asset for precision in experimental setups.

The Result

In collaboration with HORTIV Megalight, El-Rom realized the importance of lighting in tissue culture growth. During their visit to the HORTIV Megalight factory, they discovered advanced lighting technology that can be customized to different
spectrums, allowing precise control of plant growth conditions. El-Rom’s research indicated that specific light spectrums could potentially shorten the growth process, leading to significant cost savings. They are conducting ongoing experiments to refine the use of lighting to improve production times and efficiency.
